Tarot of Mystical Moments

These cards are fabulous and mysterious. They don't reveal their meaning right away. It takes time to think about their images, the sensations they evoke, and your own feelings.

Tarot of Mystical Moments Deck Review

I present to you the novelty of 2021. Most times I don’t like too picturesque Tarot decks with a world of tiny details and carefully drawn prettiness (may fans of Ciro Marchetti forgive me). But Tarot of Mystical Moments became an exception to this rule.

This deck was created by the talented German artist and illustrator Catrin Welz-Stein. Her arts are made in the technique of collage and are full of vivid images as if they came from dreams and fantasies. These cards trigger powerful emotions and are able to awaken your feelings and intuition.

Catrin had been fascinated by Tarot cards since childhood. Once upon a time, in the hard times after World War II, her grandmother earned her bread by card-reading. Since then, the Tarot seemed to Catrin something mysterious and enigmatic. The little girl grew up, became a successful illustrator and finally realized her long-held dream - she drew her own deck called Tarot of Mystical Moments.

It all began with a collaboration with the publishing house U.S. Games Systems. They admired Catrin's work and asked her to design a new deck in her amazing style. This was a challenge that required Catrin to study the Tarot system and the meaning of cards more thoroughly. The Ryder-Waite deck was taken as a basis, but Catrin came up with her own story and interpretation for each card.

Apart from the overall original style, this deck has some more differences from the classic Tarot system. The characters on the cards are very different from the Rider-Waite deck, and some images have interesting similarities with other modern decks. In the Minor Arcana, the suit symbols are not specified explicitly, but they are shown by the corresponding things within the scene. Things appear in quantities corresponding to the card number, but not always.

Tarot of Mystical Moments review

"The Fool, an adventuresome young girl, begins her journey by walking through a blooming garden. The Fool is pure and innocent and ventures out unencumbered. She enjoys herself and is curious about her surroundings. Her companion is a small bird, which represents the liberty to go anywhere. The path she is walking on is actually the tail of a huge crocodile hiding in the shadows of the garden..."

Most of the cards in this deck express a feminine perception and a feminine view of the world. Many traditionally male characters are represented by female images. But for the four kings and the Emperor card, male and female versions were created (because of this, there are as many as 83 cards in the deck). But the Fool, the Magician and the Hermit became women with no alternatives.

Catrin Welz-Stein's creativity is based on her love of children's fairy tales, fantasy, folklore and surrealism. She is inspired by the works of Frida Kahlo, Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Magritte, Botticelli and Otto Dix. In her work, Catrin uses vintage illustrations and photographs. She processes them on a computer and creates her own vivid and picturesque images. As she herself says - she works very intuitively and allows her collages to develop as they are created.

Catrin loved to draw since childhood, then studied graphic art and worked as a professional graphic designer. Now working on a computer gives her great opportunities to implement her ideas. Internet and social networks have brought her recognition, support, and motivation to engage in her favorite kind of creativity.

The deck immediately immerses you in its space, the "field". This is a parallel reality in which Tarot images exist, but it is closely related to our feelings and events. The drawings seem simple, but each image is filled with bright textures and harmonious color combinations.
